This month marks 16 years since we opened the doors of Runaround at 528 Main in Downtown Joplin. Just 900 sq ft.

Sometimes I look back at pictures of this 23-year-old kid building out an empty storefront, and I laugh a little. I had no idea what I was doing, but what I did have was a vision.

Most people probably assumed the dream was to own a running store. It wasn’t. The running store was just the way to get there.

Over the last few months, we’ve been having a lot of conversations in the store that usually start with one simple question: What if a running store could help build a healthier city?

Not just by selling shoes.

But by creating places where families can be active. By putting on events that bring people together. By connecting trails. By giving kids more opportunities. By investing in projects that make Joplin an even better place to live.

That’s always been the dream and vision.

I don’t think people always realize what happens when they choose to support a local business. It’s never just a transaction.
Every dollar that stays here gives us another opportunity to invest back into the community we love.

That’s why we’ve always cared so much about doing things the right way. It’s never been about selling the most shoes. It’s about earning your trust so we can keep building something bigger than ourselves.

Every time you choose Runaround, you’re trusting us with more than a shoe purchase. You’re trusting us to take a small piece of that investment and turn it into something that makes Joplin better.

Maybe someday that looks like a community track and field.

Maybe it’s something none of us have even imagined yet.

I don’t know exactly what the next 16 years will bring.

But I do know this… That 23-year-old kid’s vision was never a shoe store.

It was a healthier, stronger, more connected Joplin.

And I still believe we’re just getting started. …

Summer miles are better with the pack, and we are throwing down a challenge for every cross country squad in the area. Bring your entire team out to the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course on Friday, August 14th (5:00 PM – 8:00 PM) for the 2026 Runaround XC Festival. We have a dedicated 1/2 mile loop set up, stacked with demo shoes from over a dozen top-tier running brands. You get to test-run the latest spikes and trainers on actual grass, hit the brand booths for exclusive raffle entries, and hang out with the local XC community. But here is where the team rivalry comes in: every single lap your team completes gets tracked, and the squad with the most cumulative laps at the end of the night wins the Iron Pack Award, securing a completely free pair of trainers for your coach.

Whether you`re chasing a state title, or starting your first cross country season, this night is all about celebrating the sport. Come try some shoes, run some loops, connect with other runners, and help your team chase the Iron Pack award!

Get ready to kick off the 2026 cross-country season the right way! Join us Friday, August 14th, at the Tom Rutledge (MSSU) Cross Country Course from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM for a night dedicated entirely to XC athletes and coaches. Here`s why you need to be there:

Test before you buy: try out the latest cross-country spikes and trainers from HOKA, Brooks, On, New Balance, and more on our 1/2-mile test loop.

Win free shoes: We`ll have multiple challenges and games that give you a chance to win free shoes.

"The Clinic" Presented by Midwestern Built Health: We`ll pause the demo for a short, informative clinic to get you ready for the upcoming season!

Raffles and prizes: in addition to the individual and team competitions, you can visit brand booths to get entered for a chance to win even more prizes!

Admission is entirely free, but you must register to get your timing bib and step onto the course.
